The Study of Growth of the Larynx and Trachea in Korean Infants

Abstract
The author made measurements on the various parts of the laryngeal cavity and trachea in 155 Korean infants (male 72 and female 83) from the age of 1 month to 12months, and then observed the growing tendency of each part.
The results obtained are as follows:
1. Of the various parts of the laryngeal cavity at the age of 1 month, the width of the rima glottidis appears the narrowest, and the width of the rima vestibularis, sagittal diameter and transverse diameter of the subglottic space are next in order. The laryngeal entrance is the widest portion in the laryngeal cavity, appearing two times wider than the subglottic space.
2. Each part of the laryngeal cavity has grown gradually with different rate until the age of 12 months and at 12 months the width of the rima vestibularis, sagittal diameter and transverse diameter of the subglottic space become almost equal to each other.
3. There is a tendency for the sagittal diameters to grow more rapidly than the transverse diameters in the upper and lower portions of the laryngeal cavity.
4. The shape of the subglottic space appears elliptical at the age of 1 month, but it changes to a round form at the age of 12 months.
5. The length of the trachea is 39. 9mm. in the male and 36. 9mm. in the female at the age of 1 month and it grows to 58.8mm. in the male and 57.5mm. in the female at 12 months.
6. The sagittal caliber of the trachea is 3. 7mm. in the male and 3. 5mm. in the female at the age of 1 month and it grows to 6. 3mm. in the male and 6. 1mm. in the female at 12 months. The transverse diameter of the trachea is 4. 6mm. in the male and 4. 9mm. in the female at the age of i month and it grows to 8.0mm. in the male and 7.8mm. in the female. The shape of the tracheal lumen appears elliptical in all ages.
